I made this for a recent birthday. It’s all quite collage-based and so was enjoyable for the fact that it really grew quite organically through the process of layering up the paper scraps. There’s always a tension with the kind of drawing I like to do between wanting to plan things out carefully so they’ll look right, and wanting to preserve the spontaneity of the random unplanned scribble. In this case the image was planned out beforehand but became altered and changed through the process of the adding the texture and colours, which kept things feeling nice and lively.

I am an illustrator who works mostly in acrylic, watercolour, pencil and ink, and collage. I like to create pictures that look homemade and write stories that deal with the kinds of things that preoccupy you when you’re little. View all posts by samzuppardi
